Barrel wicks vs. Crown Knot Wicks

Barrel wicks have been our tried-and-true original standard since the beginning.  They are slightly bigger than crown knot wicks and therefore produce a bigger flame.  Because they are bigger they also hold more fuel, burn longer, and are also a little heavier.  They are also more durable.  The crown knot wicks are smaller, lighter, hold less fuel and produce a smaller flame.

Designing Your Custom Taped Fire Hoop

If you’re new to fire flow art, don’t be overwhelmed by all your options. Building your custom taped fire hoop is very simple!

First

Choose your tubing type and size. We have HDPE or Polypro tubing available. HDPE tubes are great for fire hoop beginners because they are thinner, softer and a bit lighter. Polypro tubes are the most popular for seasoned hoopers because they are extremely sturdy, making for a smoother hooping feel. Although rare, Polypro might crack or break in very cold weather. Ultimately tube type is a personal preference. Tubing Size is measured in OD which stands for Outside Diameter. Choose between ⅝” or ¾”. For reference, ⅝” is the size of a nickel and ¾” is the size of a quarter.

Second

Choose from 17 different hoop sizes ranging from mini and extra large! Most beginners start with a hoop around 32″-36″, while some advanced spinners prefer a smaller OD fire hoop!

Third

Select your decorative tape. Fire flow art is all about personal expression, therefore having 50 different fire hoop tape designs lets you create a stunning, uniquely personal fire hoop!

Fourth

Choose your wick type and number of wicks. We have the popular Barrel wick and the newer Crown Knot wick to choose from!

Barrel wicks are slightly larger creating a larger flame, more fuel capacity, and slightly longer burn time, so be prepared for a slightly heavier once soaked.  Crown-Knot wicks are slightly smaller and hold a bit less fuel, therefore they make a slightly smaller flame and have a slightly shorter burn-time.

Fifth

Add a roll of grip or protective tape, if desired. 3M Translucent Grip tape has a soft, textured surface that adds amazing grip and cushioning to the inside of your fire hoop because hooping for hours is hard on the hands! Crystal clear tape is a great way to protect your custom taped fire hoop for years to come while still showcasing its beauty and colorful design. Grip tape comes as roll and is not applied.

Fire Safety Tips

Before you begin fire spinning with your customizable taped fire hoop, please be prepared and confident. Most importantly, wear tighter fitting clothes and never burn alone!
